The basics
What is end of service gratuity in Qatar?
In Qatar, end of service gratuity is a lump sum your employer pays when your employment ends, set out in Labour Law No. 14 of 2004 and overseen by the Ministry of Labour. It is separate from your final salary and any unused leave, and it is a right rather than a bonus.
Once you complete one full year of service, you have earned a gratuity, and the amount grows with every year you stay. The rate is a flat three weeks of your last basic salary for each year, so the calculation is simpler than in some neighbouring countries, but the wage basis still trips people up.
- Three weeks of basic wage for every year of service
- Based on your last basic salary, allowances excluded
- Payable after one completed year, then pro rated
- Your contract can offer more, but not less
- Labour Law No. 14 of 2004, Article 54
- Three weeks is 21 days of your basic wage
- Resignation with notice does not reduce it
The formula
How Qatar gratuity is calculated
One rate applies to every year, worked out from your last basic wage.
Days per year
You earn three weeks, which is 21 days, of your last basic wage for every year of service.
21 days of basic wage per yearYour daily wage
The daily wage is your monthly basic salary divided by 30, then multiplied by 21 and your years.
basic ÷ 30 × 21 × yearsYou qualify after one completed year, and extra months beyond the first year are paid in proportion. There is no upper limit on the Qatar gratuity.
Common confusion
The old higher rates no longer apply
Many older guides still describe a rising scale in Qatar, with four weeks per year after five years and five weeks after ten. Current practice applies a flat three weeks per year for all years of service, so using the old tiers will overstate your figure. This calculator uses the three week rate that employers apply today.
Three weeks is the legal minimum, not a ceiling. Some employers offer a full month per year or more as a benefit, and where your contract states a higher rate, that rate applies. The tool protects you from being paid less than the law allows, and you can add any better contractual rate on top when you check your settlement.
Reason for leaving
How the reason for leaving changes your gratuity
In Qatar the amount is steady across most exits, with one clear exception.
Termination, resignation or expiry
Once you complete a year, ending by the employer, resigning with proper notice, or reaching the end of a fixed term all pay the full gratuity.
Under one year of service
Gratuity is payable only after one completed year of continuous service. Below that, there is no entitlement.
Dismissal under Article 61
A lawful dismissal for gross misconduct under Article 61 removes the gratuity, where the employer proves the cause. It is the one case where a full year can still pay nothing.
Know your rights
Your gratuity is a legal entitlement in Qatar
Under Labour Law No. 14 of 2004, your employer must pay your gratuity and final dues when your service ends. It is not discretionary, and a settlement that ignores Article 54 falls short of the law. Knowing the correct figure first puts you in a stronger position before you sign.
If gratuity is withheld or looks wrong, you can raise the matter with the Ministry of Labour, which handles labour complaints and refers unresolved disputes to the labour dispute committees for a binding decision. Keep your employment contract, your payslips through the Wage Protection System, and any resignation or termination letter, since these records decide the outcome.
