eVisa vs visa on arrival vs embassy: what is the difference?

All three routes can end in the same stamp in your passport, but they differ in where you apply and how much certainty you have before you fly. An eVisa is approved in advance online; a visa on arrival is decided at the airport itself; an embassy or agent application is the fallback for passports the other two do not cover.

The GCC-resident eVisa route explained

Expatriates who live and work legally in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman or Bahrain can often apply for a Saudi eVisa through their GCC residency rather than through their home passport’s eligibility status. This matters most for residents whose own nationality is not on the standard eVisa or visa-on-arrival list.

The route works differently to a standard passport-based check:

• You apply on the same KSA VISA eligibility screen, but indicate a GCC residency instead of, or alongside, your home passport.
• Your residency permit needs enough time left on it to cover the trip; the exact minimum is shown on screen when you apply.
• You typically upload a copy of your residency permit and a passport-style photo as part of the application.
• First-degree relatives sponsored under the same GCC residency, such as a spouse or child, generally apply the same way, each with their own separate application.

The UK Electronic Travel Authorization: a different route

UK citizens have a separate option worth knowing about. KSA VISA lists an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) specifically for UK passport holders, allowing multiple visits to Saudi Arabia during a validity of two years. Every traveller needs a separate application, including children, so a family cannot share one ETA between them.

An ETA is not the same product as the standard tourist eVisa described above, even though both are applied for on the same platform. If you hold a UK passport, check both options on ksavisa.sa and pick whichever matches how often you plan to visit.

Checking your eVisa or application status

Once you have applied, KSA VISA’s Track Application page is where you check progress, not the eligibility screen you started on. It needs two pieces of information you already have from your application, plus a captcha, and it shows the result on the same page.

KSA VISA vs the MOFA Visa Platform: which one applies to you

Saudi Arabia runs two visa systems in parallel while services keep moving onto the newer one. KSA VISA handles tourist eVisas, the GCC-resident route and the UK ETA. the MOFA Visa Platform (منصة التأشيرات), reachable at visa.mofa.gov.sa, is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs platform for issuing and checking visas applied for through Saudi missions and agents, now being unified under the KSA VISA platform. If your eVisa check shows no result, or you cannot apply

A blank result on Track Application is usually one of a few causes, roughly in order of how often they come up:

1. The Application or Visa number was mistyped, including a missed leading digit.
2. The passport or national ID number does not match the one used on the original application.
3. The application has not yet been logged in the system; wait a day and try again.
4. You are on the wrong platform, because the application actually went through the older MOFA Visa Platform, not KSA VISA.

If none of those explain it, contact the agent, airline package or Saudi mission that handled your application, since they hold the case file; neither this page nor KSA VISA itself can look up a record for you by phone or email.
