Visit visa insurance check

A CCHI insurance check for your visit visa tells you whether the policy behind your Saudi visit, tourist or family visit visa is still active, which insurer holds it and how long the cover runs. Saudi Arabia makes this insurance a condition of almost every visit visa, so a two-minute check before you fly, or before you host a visitor, is worth doing. This page names the official portal, the exact fields it asks for and what each result means.

Why does a Saudi visit visa need health insurance?

Saudi Arabia requires almost every visit visa holder, including tourists, Umrah and Hajj pilgrims, and family or friend visitors, to carry an active health insurance policy for the full length of their stay. The rule sits with the Council of Health Insurance, the regulator that licenses the insurers and sets the minimum cover a visit visa policy must include.

The reason is practical rather than bureaucratic. Emergency treatment in Saudi Arabia can be expensive for someone without local cover, and the government would rather an insurer settle that bill than the visitor or the health system. For most tourist eVisas applied for through the KSA VISA platform, the insurance is arranged together with the visa in one step. For a family or business visit visa handled by a sponsor or an agent, the sponsor or agent typically buys the policy on the visitor's behalf as part of preparing the paperwork.

What is CCHI, the Council of Health Insurance?

the Council of Health Insurance (مجلس الضمان الصحي) is the Saudi body that regulates health insurance, including the cover required for visit visas. It was known for years as the Council of Cooperative Health Insurance, and CCHI is still the name most people search for and use day to day, even though the council's current English branding is simply the Council of Health Insurance.

CCHI does not sell policies itself. Licensed insurance companies do that, under rules CCHI sets and enforces, and CCHI keeps the central register that lets anyone verify a policy against it. That register is exactly what the check below reads from, so the result you see is the official one, not a copy held by an agent or an insurer's own site.

How to run a CCHI insurance check for your visit visa

A CCHI insurance check for a visit visa takes one of three identifiers and returns the policy status in under a minute. Use whichever number you have to hand: your passport number, your visa number or your border number.

  1. Open the Visitor, Tourist or Pilgrim Insurance Inquiry service using the button below (it opens the official chi.gov.sa site in a new tab).
  2. Choose the identifier you want to search with: passport number (common for Umrah and Hajj), or visa number or border number for other visit visas.
  3. Type that number exactly as it appears on your document.
  4. Enter the security code shown in the image, since it is case-sensitive and expires after a short time.
  5. Submit the form using the search or inquiry button on the page.
  6. Read the result: policy status, insurer name, policy number and the cover start and end dates.

You enter your details on chi.gov.sa, the government site, not here. You type your passport, visa or border number on chi.gov.sa, the government site, not here.

The screen layout and exact button wording can change when CCHI updates its site. If a step above does not match what you see, follow the on-screen instructions and see how we verify portal steps for how often we recheck this page.

What the CCHI insurance check result means

The result screen uses a small set of fields. This table explains what each one tells you, so you know what to act on and what is just reference information.

FieldWhat it tells you
Policy statusWhether the policy is currently active, expired or not found
Insurance companyThe licensed insurer that issued the policy, who you would contact for a claim
Policy numberThe insurer's own reference for the policy, useful when calling their support line
Cover start dateThe date the policy became active, which should line up with your visa's entry period
Cover end dateThe last day the policy is valid, which should cover your planned departure date
Insured nameThe name on the policy, worth checking matches your passport exactly

What visit visa insurance actually covers

CCHI sets a minimum package every visit visa policy has to include, though insurers can offer more. This table lists the categories typically covered, without stating a specific riyal limit, since limits can vary by insurer and by policy tier and we have not been able to confirm a single figure that applies to every visit visa policy.

Coverage areaWhat it generally means
Emergency treatmentUrgent hospital and outpatient care for accidents or sudden illness during the visit
Inpatient hospitalisationA stay in hospital if emergency treatment leads to admission
Repatriation of remainsCover for returning a body to the home country in the event of death during the visit
Medical evacuationTransport to a facility able to treat a serious condition, where the policy includes it

Ask your insurer or agent for the policy schedule if you need the exact riyal limits and any exclusions, such as pre-existing conditions or elective treatment. This table is a general guide, not a substitute for reading the policy document.

Who buys the insurance: eVisa, embassy visa or sponsor

How the policy gets arranged depends on which route the visit visa came through. This table sets out the three common paths and where the check applies to each.

Visa routeHow insurance is usually arrangedWhat you can check
Tourist eVisa via KSA VISA platform Bundled into the eVisa application in the same step Run the CCHI check with your passport or visa number to confirm it went through
Family or friend visit visa Usually bought by the sponsor in Saudi Arabia, or by an agent handling the paperwork Ask the sponsor which insurer they used, then confirm on CCHI with the visa or border number
Business or embassy-stamped visa Arranged by the inviting company or a travel agent, sometimes as a separate purchase Confirm with the inviting company, then run the CCHI check before travel

If the check shows no result, or the policy looks wrong

A blank result or a status that does not match what you expected usually comes down to one of a few causes. Work through these before assuming the visit visa itself has a problem.

  • Wrong identifier: the passport, visa and border number are different formats. Try the other two if one comes back empty.
  • Typed slightly wrong: a single mistyped digit, or a security code entered after it expired, is the most common cause of no result.
  • Record still processing: a policy bought very recently may not have reached the CCHI register yet. Try again after a day.
  • Name mismatch: the insured name does not match your passport exactly, which can happen with transliteration differences. Contact the insurer to correct it before you travel.
  • Genuinely no policy: the agent or sponsor may not have completed the purchase. Ask them directly and keep any payment confirmation as proof.

None of these outcomes can be fixed on this page. CCHI's own register is the only authority on whether a policy exists and is active. For anything about the visa itself rather than the insurance, the Jawazat or your sponsor holds that record.

Do we get paid if you buy insurance through this page?

No. This page carries no paid insurer links, referral codes or affiliate tracking of any kind. Every link on this page goes straight to the official CCHI portal or another government site, and we do not earn anything if you buy a policy or run a check. If that ever changes and we add a paid insurer link, we will mark it clearly at the point it appears and update this box to say so.

Visit visa insurance check: common questions

How do I do a CCHI insurance check for a visit visa?

Open the Visitor, Tourist or Pilgrim Insurance Inquiry service on the Council of Health Insurance site (chi.gov.sa), then enter your passport number, or your visa or border number, plus the security code shown. The result shows the policy status, the insurer and the cover dates. You never enter these numbers on our page.

How can I check my visit visa insurance status online?

Use the CCHI portal, not a general search engine or a travel agent site, since only CCHI holds the official record. Choose the identifier you have (passport, visa or border number), submit it with the verification code, and read the status field. Active means covered; expired or not found needs a follow-up with your insurer or agent.

What is the difference between CCHI and CHI?

They are the same regulator. It was long known as the Council of Cooperative Health Insurance (CCHI), and its official English name is now the Council of Health Insurance. Its portal and short name CCHI are still commonly used and understood, so both names lead to the same body and the same e-services.

Does the Saudi eVisa fee already include insurance?

For most tourist eVisas issued through the KSA VISA platform, the insurance is arranged together with the visa, so you are not usually asked to buy a separate policy. Family or business visit visas processed by an agent or sponsor can work differently. Run the CCHI check either way to confirm cover before you fly.

What happens if my visit visa insurance expires while I am still in Saudi Arabia?

The policy is meant to run for your full visit, so an early expiry usually means the visit itself has overrun the visa period, or the insurer set a shorter term than expected. Contact the insurer named in your CCHI check result, or the agent or sponsor who arranged the visa, before you need medical care.

What do I do if the CCHI portal shows no insurance record for my visa?

Double-check you used the right identifier and typed the security code exactly, since a mismatch is the most common cause. If the visa is genuinely new, the record can take time to appear. If it still shows nothing after a day, ask whoever issued the visa which insurer they used and for a policy copy.
